She was educated in Finland and the United States, attending middle school and later studying at a conservatory and art school. During the 1940s, she held various roles, including critic for Suomen Sosialidemokraatti and director of the State Film Board. From 1953 to 1967, she was the editor of Teatteri magazine. She also wrote screenplays for films such as ‘Nuoruus sumussa’ and ‘Pimeänpirtin hävitys’. Aaltonen was married to actor Aarne Orjatsalo and later to journalist Matti Autio.
