Toivo Harald 'Kirves' Koljonen was a Finnish mass murderer born on December 12, 1910, in Lahti, Finland. He gained notoriety as the last Finn executed for a civilian crime, executed on October 21, 1943, for the brutal sextuple murder of a family. After escaping prison, he killed five family members and a neighbor using an axe, earning the nickname 'Kirves.' His execution marked the end of civilian death penalties in Finland, as subsequent sentences for murder were commuted. Koljonen is remembered as one of Finland's worst axe murderers.
