He played with Chick Corea's group from 1978 to 1983 and later collaborated with notable artists like Al Di Meola, Wayne Shorter, and Herbie Hancock. Initially inspired by rock bands, he transitioned to jazz after hearing Dave Brubeck's quartet. Brechtlein has performed with Robben Ford since 1986 and has toured with Corea again in 1988 and 2004. He draws inspiration from legendary drummers including Joe Morello and Elvin Jones.
