Thomas Edwin Calma, born in 1953, is an esteemed Aboriginal Australian human rights and social justice advocate, recognized as the 2023 Senior Australian of the Year. He served as the sixth chancellor of the University of Canberra from 2014 to 2023, becoming the second Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander chancellor in Australia. Calma has worked extensively in Indigenous affairs, focusing on health, education, and social justice issues. His 2005 Social Justice Report influenced the Close the Gap campaign, and he served as the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner and Race Discrimination Commissioner.
