He coached at multiple institutions including Georgetown College, Liberty Baptist College, and Cumberland College, achieving a head coaching record of 111–107–4. Over a career spanning more than 30 years, he also served as the commissioner of the Mid-South Conference. Dowling graduated from Georgetown College and had a significant influence, with his legacy continuing through his family, including his descendants named in his honor.
