Fitzgerald was the first president of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association and the inaugural recipient of the Lester Patrick Trophy for his contributions to ice hockey journalism in the U.S. He served on the Hockey Hall of Fame selection committee for ten years and won the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award posthumously.
