He discovered over 4,000 asteroids, focusing on those near Earth, and was instrumental in the Spacewatch project. Gehrels earned the Harold Masursky Award in 2007 for his contributions to planetary science. He also discovered several comets, notably 64P/Swift-Gehrels and is noted for his collaboration with Cornelis van Houten. He was a resistance member during WWII and interviewed survivors of forced labor for the Nazi regime.
