Thomas Alan Petranoff, known as Tom Petranoff, is a retired American javelin thrower born on April 8, 1958, in Aurora. He held the world record from 1983 to 1984 with a throw of 99.72 meters. Initially a baseball player, he switched to athletics at 19, competing for California State University, Northridge. Although he finished 10th at the 1984 Olympics, he won various other titles and gained South African citizenship, winning gold in African Championships in 1992 and 1993. Now, he works as a track coach, promoting his invention, the TurboJav.
