Born in Glasgow and later moving to St. Andrews, he worked as a butcher's assistant and stonemason. Scott served in the British Army during WWII and mingled with notable literary figures in London. He graduated with an M.A. and PhD from the University of Edinburgh. His interests in Scots literature grew during his travels in Europe. He married Heather Fretwell and passed away in 1995.
