He played in dance orchestras in the 1960s and was part of notable jazz and pop/rock bands like DDT-Jazzband and Hurriganes. He lived in Sydney, Australia, from 1980 to 1983 and has contributed to various LPs. Parkkonen also taught drumming and received an artist pension in 2015.
