Tommy Jarrell was a prominent American fiddle and banjo player and singer, born on March 1, 1901, in Surry County, North Carolina. Growing up in the Blue Ridge Mountains, he was influenced by his musical family, notably his father, who played fiddle in Old-Time Music bands. After abandoning music for road work after his marriage, he returned to playing after his wife's death in 1962. Jarrell recorded albums starting in 1968, was recognized with the Brown Hudson Folklore Award, and became a National Heritage Fellow in 1982.
