Tommy Núñez is a former NBA referee and founder of the Tommy Núñez foundation. Born on September 10, 1938, in Santa Maria, California, he is of Mexican American descent. In 1972, he became the first Hispanic referee in any major sport, officiating in the NBA for 30 years before retiring in 2002. Post-retirement, he focuses on youth outreach, including sports camps and programs, and directs a National Hispanic Basketball tournament. He is also the father of Tommy Núñez Jr., who followed in his footsteps as an NBA referee.
