Tomonaga Hideo was a Japanese naval officer born on December 6, 1908. Specialized in submarines, he developed several devices, including a self-suspension mechanism and measures to prevent heavy oil leakage. During World War II, he went to Germany and died by suicide aboard a U-boat along with Shōji Genzo after Germany's surrender. He was posthumously recognized for his technical contributions, ultimately attaining the rank of Navy Technical Colonel.
