Tonke Dragt is a Dutch children's author and illustrator, born on November 12, 1930, in Jakarta, Indonesia, then part of the Dutch East Indies. As the eldest daughter of a Dutch civil servant, she faced challenges during World War II, including three years in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. After moving to the Netherlands at eighteen, she studied at the Royal Academy of Arts and became both an illustrator and a teacher. Dragt gained prominence in 1962 with her novel 'Letter to the King,' winning the Golden Pen award for best young author.
