Ralph Anthony Brooker (1925-2019) was a pioneering British computer scientist known for his role in developing the Mark 1 Autocode, one of the earliest high-level programming languages. Educated at Imperial College, he contributed to significant projects at the University of Cambridge and Manchester University, where he succeeded Alan Turing in programming manuals for the Ferranti Mark 1 computer. Brooker's work laid the theoretical foundations for compiler technology, culminating in the compiler-compiler concept. He also played a key role in establishing the UK's first Computer Science degree at Manchester and served as the founding Chair of Computer Science at Essex University.
