He graduated with a law degree (cand.jur.) from the University of Bergen in 1982 and held various positions including university lecturer and legal advisor. During his tenure as a judge, he faced controversies that led to his dismissal in 2013, becoming the first judge in over a century to be removed from office. He appealed the decision but ultimately passed away while seeking remedy at the European Court of Human Rights.
