He hailed from a remote region of northern Sweden, which featured prominently in his works. Despite debuting in 1965, his breakthrough came with the novel 'Caminos de la Serpiente sobre la Roca' in 1982, later adapted into a film. His books have been translated into over 30 languages, marking him as one of Sweden's most successful contemporary authors. In 1991, he became a member of the Swedish Academy.
