Toru Kumon was a Japanese mathematics teacher born in Kōchi, Japan, in 1914. He graduated from Osaka University with a degree in mathematics and initially taught in secondary schools. In response to his son's poor performance in mathematics, he developed daily worksheets, leading to the creation of the Kumon Method, which emphasizes self-learning and mastery of subjects. This innovative approach started the first Kumon center in Osaka in 1955, and by 1958, the Kumon Educational Institute was established to guide centers worldwide.
