Toshihira Ōsumi was a renowned Japanese swordsmith born on January 23, 1932, in Ōta, Gunma Prefecture. He learned the art of sword making under the living national treasure Miyairi Yukihira and subsequently established his own forge in his hometown. Ōsumi specialized in creating swords using Tamahagane in the Bitchū tradition. He received the prestigious Masamune Prize three times and was recognized as a living national treasure in 1997. He was honored with several awards, including the Order of the Rising Sun in 2006. He passed away on October 4, 2009, at the age of 77.
