She served as the Mayor of Izunokuni city for two terms from 2013 to 2021, making history as the first female Mayor in Shizuoka Prefecture. Prior to her mayoral role, she was a member of the Shizuoka Prefecture Assembly and served in the abolished Nirayama municipality. Ono retired from politics in 2021 after losing her re-election bid against the current mayor, Masayuki Yamashita, by a significant margin.
