He contributed significantly to the digital audio revolution after earning a degree in electrical engineering from the Tokyo Institute of Technology and a PhD from Tohoku University. Doi initiated the first digital audio project at Sony, played a key role in designing the Compact Disc, and developed the CIRC error correction system. He led the design of the DASH digital audio tape recorder and managed innovative projects at Sony's Digital Creatures Laboratory, including the robotic dog Aibo and the humanoid robot Qrio.
