He was the last mayor elected by the Austin City Council prior to the introduction of direct election by city voters. In 1971, LaRue attempted to secure a second term in Austin's inaugural direct mayoral election but was defeated by Roy Butler, who won a significant majority. LaRue passed away on November 14, 2009, at the age of 96, one day after his successor's death.
