He specialized in freestyle swimming and competed for the University of Florida and Arizona State University during his collegiate years. Dalbey represented the USA at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, winning gold medals as part of the men's 4x100 meter and 4x200 meter freestyle relay teams. His Olympic experience was marred by a controversial incident where he stole a marble statue, leading to arrest and subsequent expulsion from the team.
