Tsien Tsuen-hsuin was a prominent Chinese sinologist and librarian, serving as a professor of Chinese literature and library science at the University of Chicago. He was the curator of the East Asian Library from 1949 to 1978. His academic work focused on the history of Chinese bookmaking, bibliography, and paleography, as well as the science and technology of paper and printing in China. Notably, during World War II, he risked his life to smuggle thousands of rare books out of China, which was occupied by Japan at the time.
