Hettema worked in the library sector and at the Frisian Literary Museum and Documentation Centre, later merging into Tresoar. Initially writing short stories published in various magazines, he shifted to poetry, debuting with 'Tsi tsi' in 1996. His posthumous collection 'Hewwy dát' was released after his death. Hettema was also active in the poets' collective RIXT and wrote in both Frisian and Stellingwerf dialect.
