Duraisamy Uruttiramurthi was a prominent poet in the Tamil literary tradition of Sri Lanka, regarded as one of its key figures. Born on January 9, 1927, in Alavetti, Jaffna, he is known by the pen name Mahakavi. He also wrote under several other pseudonyms, including Pandithar, Mapadi, and Mahalakshmi, among others. He was contemporaneous with notable poets like Neelavanam and Murugaiyan, contributing significantly to the poetry scene in the region until his passing on June 20, 1971.
