José María Matanzas Gorostizaga, known as Txema Matanzas, is a Basque lawyer, politician, and former prisoner born on May 9, 1965, in Santurtzi. He was incarcerated since November 2007 due to his involvement in the 18/98 case, specifically within the Ekin group, and received a sentence of ten years and nine months. The case stemmed from an operation led by judge Baltasar Garzón in 1998 that targeted the Egin newspaper and various individuals, establishing a political-judicial principle of "Everything is ETA." Matanzas was among 38 convicted in a verdict handed down in 2009.
