Uma Shankar Dikshit was an Indian politician and cabinet minister who served as the Governor of Karnataka and West Bengal. Born on January 12, 1901, in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, he was deeply involved in the Indian independence movement and held various significant positions in politics, including Minister of Home Affairs and Health. He was a close associate of Jawaharlal Nehru and later supported Indira Gandhi during the Congress split in 1969. Dikshit was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1989 and founded a girls' college in his birthplace in memory of his mother. He passed away on May 30, 1991.
