He served as the second headmaster of the Kiyomoto lineage and was also known by the names Kiyomoto Kiyonosuke and Kiyomoto Umetaro. In addition to performing and composing new Japanese music under the name Matsubara Sōfū, he held titles in other traditional styles, like Tōmei Ginkyō and Ogiekō Tōjirō. He was recognized as a holder of Important Intangible Cultural Properties, earning the designation of Living National Treasure.
