Ursula Geissler was a prominent German botanist and university lecturer known for her extensive research on algae and hydrobiology, particularly diatoms. She led the Algae and Hydrobiology research group at the Free University of Berlin for over 20 years until her retirement in 1996. Geissler earned her Ph.D. in 1958 and habilitated in 1968. She published numerous works on diatom studies and contributed to conservation efforts by including marine and freshwater macroalgae in the Red Lists of endangered species in East Germany and Berlin. Several algae species are named in her honor.
