Ussama Makdisi is a Palestinian American historian specializing in the modern Middle East. He serves as a professor of history and Chancellor’s Chair at the University of California Berkeley, with a research focus on cultural and political history, identity, sectarianism, nationalism, and modernity. In 2018, Makdisi was awarded the Berlin Prize. He comes from an influential academic family, being the nephew of literary theorist Edward Said and son of Jean Said Makdisi.
