He notably served as the founding Director General of the Indian Coast Guard from 1978 to 1980 and was the 4th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff from 1973 to 1977, marking the longest tenure in that role in Indian Navy history. He played a significant role during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, where he led the Southern Naval Area and was awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal for his leadership.
