Vahid Asghari is an Iranian political prisoner and a defender of freedom of expression and women's rights. He was arrested by Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces on May 8, 2008, while heading to Imam Khomeini International Airport due to his human rights activism. He was held in solitary confinement for two years without trial. Judge Aboulghasem Salavati of the Islamic Revolutionary Court sentenced him to death twice in 2011 and 2012, without his participation in court proceedings and without the freedom to choose his lawyer. His case remains monitored by international human rights organizations.
