Väinö Karanko (originally Savolainen) was a Finnish colonel who served in the Border Guard and the Finnish Defense Forces. He was born on April 5, 1901, in Valtimo and died on April 24, 1983. During World War II, he held various staff positions in military units, including commander of Separate Battalion 16 and chief of staff of the 6th Division. He graduated from the Cadet School in 1927 and the War College in 1935. Karanko was also involved in the military after the war, including leading the Reserve Officer School.
