Walentyn Hryhorowytsch Lapa is a Ukrainian-Soviet computer scientist and mathematician, born on October 2, 1939, in Kyiv. He studied at the Polytechnic Institute in Kyiv and worked there from 1961 to 1973. He contributed significantly to the field of cybernetics and was involved in various research institutes in Kyiv, later becoming a professor. Lapa is known for developing the Group method of data handling (GMHD), an early technique that relates to deep learning, with Oleksij Iwachnenko, whose first publication on the method was in 1965. He retired in 1999.
