Valeri Nikolaevich Kubasov was a Soviet and Russian cosmonaut who flew into space on two missions under the Soyuz program as a flight engineer: Soyuz 6 and Soyuz 19 (Apollo-Sojuz mission). He commanded the Soyuz 36 mission in the Intercosmos program. On July 21, 1975, he was the first to exit the Soyuz spacecraft that landed in Kazakhstan. Kubasov also performed the first welding experiment in space. He contributed to the development of the Mir space station and retired from the Russian space program in November 1993.
