Born in Lacon, Illinois, she had four children and became a high school English teacher after her husband lost an election in 1958. The family moved back to West Virginia in 1965, but after her husband's death shortly after, she returned to Illinois. Tragically, Valerie lost her life in an apartment fire in 1977.
