Vance DeVoe Brand is an American naval officer, naval aviator, aerospace engineer, test pilot, and NASA astronaut, born on May 9, 1931. He was the pilot during the first U.S.-Soviet joint spaceflight in 1975 and commanded three Space Shuttle missions. Brand has a total flight experience of 9,669 hours, which includes 8,089 hours in jet aircraft, 391 hours in helicopters, and 746 hours in spacecraft, along with testing over 30 military aircraft. He was selected as part of Astronaut Group 5.
