Vartan Gregorian was an Armenian-American academic and historian who served as president of the Carnegie Corporation from 1997 until his death in 2021. He immigrated to the U.S. from Iran at 22 and earned his PhD from Stanford. With a focus on the Muslim world, he taught at various universities and later became provost at the University of Pennsylvania. He also served as president of the New York Public Library and Brown University, receiving numerous awards including the National Humanities Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
