He graduated from the University of Athens and earned a master's degree in Geophysics from St. Louis University. He served as a professor of Seismology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where he established the first seismic laboratory in Greece. Papazachos authored over 200 research papers and was instrumental in anti-seismic design for large projects in Greece. He was also active in politics, supporting the Left and running for positions such as mayor of his hometown and parliament.
