Ustimenko was a significant contributor to the history of the Chernihiv region, having authored or co-authored over 20 books. He was a founding member of the Special Messenger Service of Ukraine and held the rank of State Employee of the 2nd class. Ustimenko was awarded the Mykhailo Kotsyubynsky and Dmytro Yavornytsky prizes and served as a people's ambassador.
