He served as Armenia's first Minister of Defense from 1991 to 1992 and again from 1995 to 1999, playing a crucial role during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Sargsyan became Prime Minister of Armenia in June 1999. He was instrumental in consolidating Armenian military forces and had a significant influence on political decisions until his assassination during a shooting in the Armenian parliament.
