Vern Harper, also known by his traditional name Asin meaning Stone or Grandfather, was a respected Cree Elder, medicine man, and advocate for Aboriginal rights in Canada. Born on June 17, 1936, he was a notable urban elder and a descendant of significant Cree leaders, being the fifth generation grandson of Mistawasis, a hereditary chief, and the sixth generation grandson of the renowned Big Bear. Harper dedicated his life to the preservation of Indigenous culture and the rights of Indigenous people until his passing on May 12, 2018.
