Vernon M. Tanner, also known as Mingo Big Bear Claw, was a leader of the Chaloklowa Chickasaw Indian People in South Carolina. He was recognized in 2004 by the South Carolina General Assembly for his significant contributions to Native American affairs, particularly for developing regulations for Native American recognition. However, controversy arose regarding the authenticity of his indigenous ancestry. Despite this, Tanner served on the South Carolina Commission for Minority Affairs until 2018 and was known as the last traditional medicine man in South Carolina.
