She began singing lessons at age fifteen and trained in Copenhagen and Vienna. Her debut was at Den Norske Opera in 1963, and from 1967 she became a permanent member, performing various significant roles. Hanssen was a prominent force in the opera world, singing a total of 52 roles before retiring in 1990. She received notable awards, including the Kritikerprisen in 1976 and Hederspris in 1981, and married Tore Kleverud in 1989.
