He significantly contributed to the development of theater in Chile and was instrumental in the evolution of traditional Chilean music. Jara founded the Nueva Canción Chilena movement, which became the national music style during the presidency of Salvador Allende. Due to his political activism, he was arrested during the 1973 Chilean coup, tortured, and ultimately killed, with his body discarded in the streets of Santiago.
