Viktor Semyonovich Abakumov was a high-ranking Soviet security official who served as the head of the Soviet intelligence organization SMERSH from 1943 to 1946 and then as the Minister of State Security from 1946 to 1951. Known for his brutality, he personally tortured prisoners. He was removed from his position and arrested in 1951 over fabricated charges related to the doctor's plot. After Joseph Stalin's death, he was tried for orchestrating the Leningrad affair, sentenced to death, and executed in 1954.
