He played in basketball and football, participating in the National Basketball League with the Hammond Ciesar All-Americans, where he scored two points in five games during the 1938-39 season. Oliver also had a brief NFL career as a backup quarterback for the Chicago Cardinals in the 1945 season, where he played in three games and had four completions in ten attempts, including one start.
