Viola Liuzzo was an American civil rights activist born in April 1925. She answered Martin Luther King Jr.'s call and traveled from Detroit to Selma, Alabama, to participate in the Selma to Montgomery marches in March 1965. Tragically, at the age of 39, she was shot by Ku Klux Klan members while transporting fellow activists. Although Alabama failed to convict her murderers, they were charged in federal court for conspiracy under a Civil Rights Act. Posthumously honored, her name is memorialized in Montgomery's Civil Rights Memorial.
