Violet Cowden was an American aviator and a member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) during World War II. Born on a farm in South Dakota, she obtained her pilot's license before the war and joined the WASP despite initial disqualification due to her height and weight. She became one of the few women to fly military planes, including the renowned P-51 Mustang. Cowden remained active in community affairs in California post-war, receiving the Congressional Gold Medal in 2010. She lived a vibrant life of adventure, including skydiving and participating in aerial mock dogfights.
